SLASSCOM (Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies) has entered into a strategic partnership with EDEX for the first time for the forthcoming EDEX-2011 Expo.
SLASSCOM acts as the catalyst of growth for the Sri Lankan IT and BPO industry by facilitating trade and business, propagating education and employment, encouraging research and innovation, and by supporting the creation of a progressive national policy framework.
Sri Lankan IT/BPO industry is fast emerging as a key industry sector in Sri Lanka contributing $275million in export revenue and creating large number of professional jobs especially for the youth.
“The exposure SLASSCOM is aiming for at EDEX 2011 is to primarily focus on creating awareness among youth in terms of the benefits of selecting IT as a lucrative career path. We also want to attract the youth by stressing that the BPO industry is one of the fastest growing and profitable industries in Sri Lanka generating highly paid professional jobs”, Madu Ratnayake, Director/General Secretary of SLASSCOM said.
To facilitate the growth in the IT-BPO sector, SLASSCOM has also formed key fora namely; Capacity, HR, Global Trade, Domestic Trade, Quality, and the Policy Forum. This year two new initiatives in terms of creating a strong Sri Lankan expatriate linkage programme, and the setting-up of Centers of Excellence are being rolled out.
These initiatives will be strengthened further at EDEX EXPO, as it draws in thousands of youth, including IT savvy ones, who can benefit from the host of opportunities, opening windows of new learning, innovation and enterprise.
“At EDEX, we will also enlighten the students and parents on the wide array of options available in IT and BPO, and highlight the skills required that will empower them to increase their earning potential”, Ratnayake said.
“Our youth certainly have the potential. With tremendous prospects in the global IT/BPO industry, Sri Lanka can leap frog into economic prosperity provided more school leavers develop competencies as well as an interest in meeting the entry requirements”, Kamal Abeysinghe, Chairman EDEX stressed.
EDEX is the pioneering higher education and careers exhibition in Sri Lanka organized by Royal College Union attracting the largest and most diverse number of local and overseas participants held annually in Colombo and Kandy. The 8th EDEX expo will be held on January 22nd, 23rd & 24th 2011 at BMICH Colombo and on January 26th & 27th at the Kandy City Centre respectively under its theme for 2011, “Be Wise, EDEX-Wise”.
